The planet is surrounded by a ring system that emits high levels of ionic radiation. As a result, the planet's atmosphere has become so concentrated with the radiation that all forms of [[sensor]], [[transporter|transport]], and communication signals become distorted or scattered as they pass through it.<br />

Over the past two centuries, the Kolaarins have developed a method of transmitting communications through the atmosphere with minimal degradation using concentrated pulses of simulated solar radiation to temporarily de-ionize a small portion of the atmosphere before sending signals to an orbital satellite system.<br />

In 2383, the [[USS Pioneer]] visited the planet during a diplomatic mission to consider their application for Federation membership. Their application was later denied following the kidnapping of several members of the ''Pioneer'' crew by members of the planetary government.<br />
